I’m getting divorced or legally separated

As your life changes, so do your benefits needs. If you’re currently separated or are going through a divorce, consider the items on the Life Change Checklist in light of your new situation.

Click on the sections below for more information.

  1. Decide what changes you want to make to your benefits, as allowed.
  2. Consider whether you need to make changes to your Life and Accident insurance coverage
  3. Make allowable changes to your benefits within 30 days after the divorce. Don't forget to update your dependents and your Life, Accident, Retirement Savings and Discounted Stock beneficiaries, as applicable! Also, be sure to update your Pension record to reflect the change in your marital status.
  4. Update your mailing address on PeopleConnect, if needed.
  5. Update your marital status on PeopleConnect.
  6. Re-assess your financial plan for retirement.
  7. Use your EAP benefits for help with the financial, legal and emotional issues related to a change in marital status.
  8. Ensure your beneficiaries are up to date.

With flexible benefits, you can change your benefit choices and dependents each autumn during the annual enrollment period. You also can change your choices during the year if you experience a life event, such as marriage, birth or adoption, or if your spouse loses his or her benefits coverage. You will have 30 days after a life event to go online to register the life event and re-enroll through the My Benefits Portal website. Otherwise, you can change your benefits and update your dependents only during the annual enrollment period.
